“Ivan Popoca vs. Daniel Garcia Set for Jan. 23rd in Cicero!”

        Ivan Popoca VS Khristian Geraci

CHICAGO, December 29, 2008 — Forget the cold weather and the snow in Chicago. Skip the holidays. Junior welterweight prospect Ivan Popoca is too focused on the task at hand to pay much attention to either.

Preparing for his next fight on Friday, January 23rd, the undefeated junior welterweight hasn’t stopped training through the holidays. Fighting five times in 2008, Popoca’s last two bouts have ended in crushing first round knockouts, further cementing his status for Chicago fight fans as must-see events.

“For me, 2009 is going to be a huge year, I want to set the tone on January 23rd and move forward quickly from there. Six to eight fights in 2009 and a move up to the world rankings,” said the confident 26 year old.

Training at Chicago ’s JABB Boxing Gym for the last few years, Popoca’s name has become synonymous with its growing clientele of pros and amateurs.

“In the last six months, he’s really become the boss here. He’s here to train everyday without fail and he’ll spar anyone. We had some tough Russian professionals here last month and Ivan was the first one to challenge them. Same with many other pros who are more experienced, he’s fearless and will challenge anyone,” said gym owner Dominic Pesoli, also President of 8 Count Productions, which handles Popoca.

Known for his all-out wars in the gym, Popoca typically stops traffic in the gym as other fighters halt their workouts to catch a glimpse of the most talked about prospect in the Chicagoland area.

Continued Pesoli, “He sets the tone here, other fighters, amateur and pro know this is serious business when they see how hard he works. He loves to spar and he’s got a bit of a street fighter mentality which works to his advantage in the ring.”

Said trainer Mike Garcia, “Ivan’s one of the hardest working guys I’ve ever been around. He’s really come around and turned the corner in the last year and he’s become much smarter to go along with his aggressiveness. 2009 could be a terrific year for him. Boxing fans in Chicago want to see action packed fights and that’s what Ivan gives them, every time out.”

Popoca, 8-0-1 (7KO’s), will face Houston ’s Daniel Garcia at Cicero Stadium as part of “NEW YEAR’S REVOLUTION”, an evening of world class professional boxing presented by Dominic Pesoli’s 8 Count Productions. The equally heavy handed Garcia brings a record of 9-5-1 (7KO’s), into the scheduled six rounder against Popoca.

Advance tickets, starting at $30, can be obtained in advance by calling the 8 Count Productions office at 312-226-5800. Cicero Stadium is located at 1909 S. Laramie in Cicero . Doors on the evening of the event will open at 7pm with the first bell at 8pm.

“NEW YEAR’S REVOLUTION” is presented along with Miller Lite, TCF Bank, Jack Daniels and EL Jimador Tequila.

TCF is a Wayzata, Minnesota-based national financial holding company with $16.4 billion in total assets. The company has 453 banking offices in Minnesota , Illinois , Michigan , Colorado , Wisconsin , Indiana and Arizona , providing retail and commercial banking services, and investments and insurance products. TCF also conducts leasing and equipment finance business in all 50 states.

8 Count Productions was started by Dominic Pesoli in 1998 and has consistently presented the highest quality professional boxing events in Chicagoland. In 2003, Pesoli along with former featherweight contender Mike Garcia opened JABB Boxing Gym, a 6,000 square foot venue dedicated to the finest Chicagoland boxers of all talent levels.

Team Olszewski Statement on the Olszewski/ Raoui WIBA Flyweight Title Fight

(DEC 24) Team Olszewski would like to comment on remarks made about the December 20th fight that took

place in Zurich, Switzerland. Some members of the Boxing press have called the decision controversial.

The only thing we find controversial is the scoring of the Austrian Judge Vogl who had it 98-92 for Raoui.

We knew an Austrian judge would be biased for the German fighter because the promoter, Saureland Events only uses the Austrian Boxing Commission in Germany and Switzerland. He was the local judge who favored the local fighter.

Eileen was quoted after the fight, ” I feel that I landed the more effective punches throughout the fight and did more than enough to win.” Eileen was the only fighter from the Red corner not to lose that night. Evander Holyfield also came out of the red corner.

Saureland Events fighters all came from the blue corner. Anyone one who knows boxing,  knows how hard it is to get out with a draw on foreign soil.

It would be totally irrational to think that the judges would favor Eileen Olszewski who was coming out of the opponent corner .  That would be an absurd thought! To Contact  Team Olszewski  Please write to Boxing@msn.com  or Call The Boxing Hotline at 845-893-2829

Sexy Stacy “StayLo” Reile Signs with Boxing Kid Management

by David Pambianchi

Super Bantamweight boxer Stacy Reile traded in her Macintosh apples and New York winters for Florida oranges and Miami sunshine. But this physical trainer and massage therapist plans to keep ties to the Big Apple and capture a few boxing titles by agreeing to sign on with 2008 “WIBA Manager of the Year” David Selwyn who handles women champions and top fighters such as Eileen Olszewski, Jill Emery and Ronica Jeffrey.

Stacy’s bubbly personality and attractive appearance belie her ability and ring potential. Ambidextrous, with a jab that snaps sharp, accurate and crisp, knock out power with both hands, strong legs and not to mention a tough chin, she feels her time has come.

Enthusiastic and confident, she overcame distractions and fought hard when the odds were against her. Although often fighting on short notice without time to prepare, sometimes as little as a few days, then dealing with jetlag, unenthusiastic trainers or management, no one to complain after taking late hits after the bell and generally dealing with the fight-game on her own, she still managed an 8-1 professional record against some tough opponents. New Manager David Selwyn states, “She needs somebody that will look out for her, and get her the match’s she needs. She’s hungry for a title.”

Stacy hopes to someday open her own Gym and Health Spa. In the mean time, boxing fans get ready for action.

Valuev stops Holyfield by majority decision

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP)—Nikolai Valuev likely ended Evander Holyfield’s last chance at winning a fifth heavyweight title, narrowly defending his WBA title by majority decision on Saturday night.

The 46-year-old American, attempting to become the oldest heavyweight to win a major belt, started the fight by moving around the ring to neutralize Valuev’s long reach advantage.

The 7-foot Russian, the tallest and heaviest champion ever, struggled to close down Holyfield early but began asserting his jab as Holyfield tired.

One judged scored the bout a draw, while the others had Valuev winning 116-112 and 115-114.

“Of course I am disappointed,” Holyfield said. “I thought I had done enough to get the win. Now I have to go home and think about my future.”

Holyfield (42-10-2) had not fought since losing a one-sided decision to then-WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov over a year ago, and was much criticized for this latest comeback attempt. Some critics suggested he was putting his health at risk by fighting at such an advanced age.

Still, the “Real Deal” appeared in great shape for the fight and was never seriously hurt by Valuev (51-1), who has avoided the top heavyweights and did little to improve his standing in the division. He was vulnerable to Holyfield’s right hooks, many of which landed, even if the Russian also was never stunned.

AP - Dec 20, 6:29 pm EST

“He made me work very hard for the win,” said Valuev, the overwhelming favorite and underwhelming winner. “Holyfield was unbelievable with his speed. The fight was fought at a great tempo for the whole 12 rounds.”

Later rounds were largely uneventful, with the Atlanta native dancing and looking for the rare opportunity to attack in combinations. The Russian, who carried a weight advantage of almost 100 pounds, planted himself in the center of the ring and rarely unleashed power punches.

“His hands are not as slow as everyone thinks they are,” Holyfield said.

For Valuev, it was the biggest win on a weak resume. He has so far refused to fight either of the Klitschko brothers, who hold the other major belts and are considered the top two heavyweights in the world.

Holyfield has refused to say if he would retire should he lose or draw against Valuev. Struggling with financial problems, Holyfield may try to use the better-than-expected result to score a big payday against another champion or Riddick Bowe, who has recently made a similarly worrisome comeback.

Holyfield won one of three epic battles against Bowe in the 1990s, when he beat Buster Douglas, George Foreman and Mike Tyson twice to become a dominating figure in the sport.

This fight was put on in front of 12,500 largely pro-Holyfield fans in Zurich’s Hallenstadion. Holyfield entered to a standing ovation, wearing a red robe fit for a king.

Valuev was booed, and there were even scattered whistles while the Russian national anthem played. The fans similarly showed their displeasure when the judges’ scorecards were read.

40 families still awaiting adoption with the Adopt a Family Project

As our days grow shorter and the weather becomes colder, many of us shift our thoughts to the joy of the holiday season and the closeness of our families. Unfortunately, many families in our community are struggling with poverty, disabilities, homelessness, abandonment, or the effects of a slow economy and the holidays can be a very worrisome time.  Without the help of caring community members these families will struggle to meet their basic needs and may go without enough food and warm winter clothing, let alone toys or other holiday gifts.

The Volunteer Centers of Santa CruzCounty are in urgent need of your help this Holiday Season. Each year they make the holidays a little brighter for families in need through the Adopt a Family Program.  Our warehouses have opened and there are still 40 families awaiting adoption.  You can be the difference this winter by calling today. We encourage individuals, businesses, clubs, and churches to open their hearts by providing gift certificates or financial contributions. Episode 3 of The Contender Tournament on VS

 from:http://www.versus.com/thecontender_recap

The Contender on VERSUS
“It’s Like a Mixture of Fear and Victory”

Tommy Brooks gives the Gold Team a wake up call.  During training, Ryan starts trouble with another fighter.  In a match up that pits a boxer against a slugger, two contenders battle it out in the most explosive fight of the tournament yet.
After a 5-round, lopsided brawl with the Gold Team’s Jon Schneider, Alfredo Escalera Jr. wins the second fight of the Contender Tournament and keeps the “Power of Choice” with the Blue Team.
Back in the loft, the Gold Team broods over their loss.  “The better man won,” says Rico Hoye.  “Accept it.  Be the better man next time.”  Rico goes on to point out that the Blue Team is going after the weak, and when they pick someone, “they lookin’ at you as someone that they can beat, pick on, flat out.”  This alarms Tim, who, at 41 years old, is the oldest of all the fighters.  To boost everyone’s morale, Troy Ross reminds the team that they are still six fighters strong and the Blue Team has not broken their spirits.  AK Laleye further rallies the team with fiery words of encouragement.  He then states, “If I were to fight next, trust me, I will turn back the tide.  The buck will stop there with me.”
The next morning, Coach Tommy Brooks takes the Gold Team out to the Glove Wall, where the gloves of fallen teammates Joell Godfrey and Jon Schneider hang on the wall in defeat.  Perturbed, Tommy lights into the team, “It’s not rocket science.  Just follow instructions!” he scolds.  “If you’re not gonna step up to the plate, then tell somebody to get you a plane ticket and go the **** home!”  Taking note, Tim explains that Tommy is one of the best trainers in the world.  “It’s an advantage to listen to him,” he says.  “It just seems like when guys get in there, they’re throwing the game plan out the window.”  Continuing his rant, Tommy states, “I’ve been in your rooms, and last time I checked, I ain’t see no panties or no bras.  Man up!”
At the start of training, Tommy hollers at former student, now coach of the Blue Team, John Bray.  “Grasshopper!  You did it again,” he exclaims.  “But I didn’t teach you everything.”  Laughing, John comments on the vibe in the gym.  “It’s like a mixture of fear and victory,” he quips.  “No fear here, baby,” Tommy replies.  “Grasshopper’s up two fights.  He’s snatched the pebble out of my hand twice,” says Tommy.  “I have to close my hand off and Grasshopper’s gonna have to work a little bit harder to try and get it.”
As the teams train, Richard Gingras of the Blue Team eyes Tim.  Richard notes that Tim is “a little older; he’s sluggish; he might be the weakest link.”  Richard’s teammate Erick Vega, meanwhile, observes AK.  “He’s a little smaller, and I’m used to fighting bigger guys… I’d break him down.”  Feeling the heat, AK makes it known that while he is the “littlest guy… there is no vulnerability over here.”
Later, Ryan Coyne makes a bold statement when he shows up in the gym wearing a headband with Hino Ehikhamenor’s name printed on it.  “I’m watching the Gold Team,” says Ryan.  “The vultures are circling.  So I decided to make a preemptive strike to let everyone know I wanna fight Hino.”  Rankled and feeling disrespected, Hino questions Ryan’s move, considering he has a cut on his eye that’s still in the early stages of healing.  “How dare he call me out when he know that would definitely be my target if we fight!”  Carrying on with his taunting, Ryan explains, “With Hino, I see a guy who doesn’t rely on his right hand a whole lot.  I’m already injured and I don’t want anyone jabbing me on the left side of my face.”
After training, Tony Danza assembles the teams in front of the Contender Bracket Board.  He congratulates Alfredo and the Blue Team on their second consecutive win and gives Alfredo the choice of when he would like to fight in Round 2 of the tournament.  Alfredo pauses to consider his options: There are four fights in the next round, with Felix Cora, considered a frontrunner in the tournament, slotted to fight in the first match.  Choosing “a little more time to rest,” Alfredo slides his name into the bracket for the second match and avoids a fight against Felix, for now.
With his decision made, Tony reminds the teams that the Blue Team still has the Power of Choice to choose the next match and sends the teams off to their rooms for Deliberation.
In the Blue Team’s room, John addresses Ryan and the Gold Team about his disapproval of wearing headbands with other people’s names on it.  “Stay humble,” he warns.  Meanwhile, the Gold Team sits and waits.  Tommy reminds the team, “I hate losing.  Ain’t nothing fun about that.”  Half joking, AK says he’s afraid Tommy might kill someone if they don’t win the next fight.  Back in the other room, the Blue Team mulls over who will fight next.  Erick and Richard both voice their readiness.  “I’ve been ready to go in there since day one,” says Erick.  “I’m ready to rock and roll.”
At Call Out, Tony asks the Blue Team who they’ve chosen to step forward and fight. Erick steps up to the mat, and with no hesitation, he calls out AK.  It’s official: The third fight of the Contender Tournament will see Erick—a power-punching brawler—faces off against AK—a skilled boxer and showman who’s energetic and quick on his feet.  “Styles make fights,” says John. “We’re gonna see a very entertaining boxing match.  It’s the boxer versus the slugger.”
At the fight, AK displays his killer instincts and slick moves.  Floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee, AK bounces around the ring and fires quick jabs.  Shouting at Erick from the corner, John tells Erick to go after the body and wear AK down. Despite looking slow and feeling frustrated, Erick ignores John’s game plan.  He chases after AK, hunting for his head and looking for opportunities to knock AK out.
Erick takes heed to John’s advice in the third round and makes a comeback.  Finally getting his punches off, Erick throws several combinations to AK’s body and head.  Thrown by Erick’s approach, AK pulls out a dirty trick he’s used in fights in the past and gets Erick in a clinch to then pull his trunks down.
Erick’s lack of stamina gets the best of him in the fourth round, but in the fifth and final round, he comes out of the corner swinging.  Down at least 3 rounds, with only one more round to go, Erick needs a knockout.  He throws a powerful combo that stuns AK and sends him reeling into the ropes.  With the crowd going wild, AK tries to recover and survive the round.  Just when it looks like the end for him, out of nowhere, AK swings at Erick with a deadly punch that sends Erick falling backwards against the ropes.  With both fighters now punch drunk, AK and Erick stagger around the ring in a daze.  The crowd goes mad.  Amazingly, both fighters manage to stay on their feet till the very end.
When the judges’ scorecards are announced, it’s unanimous—“All for the winner… Akinyeme “AK” Laleye!!!”
Afterwards, Erick sulks in defeat over a fight he believes he could have won.  Though he fought hard and came close, he sees no reason why he should have lost.  Re-evaluating his boxing career, Erick reaches the brink of tears as he explains; “this is the end for me, as far as boxing goes… Sorry if I let anyone down.  Sorry to disappoint… I tried my best…time to move on.”
13 fighters remain…who will be the Contender?
