RESULTS FROM CICERO!

Mike Nevitt decisions Shay Mobley at Cicero Stadium

By Joe Harrison

Mike Nevitt vs. Shay Mobley

On Friday night, light heavyweight Mike Nevitt (16-1, 6 KOs) scored an eight-round unanimous decision over Shay Mobley (17-10-1, 7 KOs) at the Cicero Stadium located near Chicago. Throughout the contest, both boxers were punching on the inside and clinching frequently. The bout almost ended in the first round when Nevitt landed a barrage of punches, sending Mobley into the ropes where he got tangled up. After Referee Gerald Scott gave Mobley a standing eight-count, Mobley was able to clinch repeatedly to survive the round.

Rounds two, three, and four were filled with more clinching as Mobley moved forward and each man attacked the body. It was in round five when Scott warned both boxers for clinching. For the next couple rounds, Nevitt and Mobley began to trade more punches before they slowly got back into their pattern of inside fighting and clinching. There were also a few delays due to Mobley spitting out his mouthpiece and taking a moment to have it put back in his mouth.

Mike Nevitt vs. Shay Mobley

In the final round, both boxers began to exchange punches when Mobley’s mouthpiece came out again. This time, Scott did not hesitate to take point away from Mobley. When action resumed, Nevitt was able to land more body shots before the clinching reoccurred. After the bout, the judges had scores of 80-70, 79-71, and 78-72, all in favor of Nevitt.

Afterward, Nevitt expressed satisfaction over his victory. “I felt good, I have two great guys in my corner, Freddie Cuevas and Al Ortiz, and they really helped me out. I did get a little tired in the second round, but I caught my second wind, I thought I could’ve gone another four or five rounds. I had him hurt in the first round; I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t take him out. I got to give him credit, he’s an experienced fighter, a heck of a good fighter, he’s a survivor, and he fought the whole way, so props to him.”

Mike Nevitt

“I think I was in better shape, I was faster, I moved a lot better, and I wasn’t trying to just throw one punch to knock him out. I was throwing quick punches, I was in great shape.” “I was training for nine months straight. A couple fights fell through and I just kept training. I’d like to return next year some time, and we’ll see what comes my way. I’d like to thank my fans; I love the sport of boxing.”

Juan Bailon vs. Anthony Mora

In the opening bout, featherweight Barbero Zepeda (9-20-2, 2 KOs) used his experience and ruthless aggression to defeat Juan Bailon (3-1, 1 KO) by a four-round unanimous decision. Zepeda was the busier boxer, throwing more punches and backing Bailon against the ropes. In rounds three and four, Bailon found success by throwing more uppercuts, but it was not enough to earn the win. The judges scored it 39-37, 40-36, and 40-39, all in favor of Zepeda.

Ryan Smedick vs. Gustavo Palacios

Also on the undercard, welterweight Ryan Smedick (2-0, 1 KO) landed just enough crushing punches to earn the unanimous decision over Gustavo Palacios in the scheduled four-round bout. Palacios appeared to be in control as he stalked Smedick around the ring, but he had trouble avoiding Smedick’s left hook as it would pounce off his face. The punches seemed to have crushing effect as Palacios began to slow down. By the fourth round, Smedick began to taunt his fatigued opponent, tapping his chin, inviting Palacios to hit him. In the end, the judges had scores of 40-36 and 39-37 twice, all in favor of Smedick.

Eric Estrada vs. Ivan Rodriguez

The final bout featured super bantamweights Eric Estrada and Ivan Rodriguez. Estrada (6-0, 2 KOs) utilized his jab as Rodriguez (9-5-1, 3 KOs) tried to get inside and brawl with him. With the jabs, Estrada was able to set up a straight right that sent Rodriguez down to the canvas during the third round. Once the fight resumed, the fighters began to trade in effort to gain the upper hand. When the bout was over, the judges scored it 58-56 and 59-55 twice, all in favor of Estrada by unanimous decision.

Radisson Rumble Poster

Walker vs. Echols
Michael Walker (r) connects with a big right to the head of Antwun Echols.

September 3, 2008 (Merrillville, In)- On Friday October 3rd, Michael “Midnight Stalker” Walker (18-1, 12KOs) returns to action at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza as he battles Antwun Echols (31-8, 27KOs) in a rematch from their epic main event on ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights in February. Their first meeting resulted in a draw and Walker has every intention of erasing that blemish off his record. Since their first encounter, Michael Walker suffered a hard fought unanimous decision loss at the hands of David Lopez on Solo Boxeo. The Chicago native is excited about fighting once again in front of the loyal One In A Million Boxing fans who have supported him for years.

“This is the biggest fight of Michael’s career. There’s no denying the magnitude of the rematch against Antwun Echols. He knows he has to come back and put on a dazzling performance in order to remain a top middleweight contender. Despite taking the fight on only a couple weeks notice, Michael put forth a tremendous effort against David Lopez who is an extremely talented fighter. Walker has been entrenched in one of the most intense training camps he has ever been a part of. I have no doubt that on October 3rd at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza the world will see the best Michael Walker ever. I also have no doubt we will see the best Antwun Echols ever. Together, both Walker and Echols are sure to produce a middleweight war. “Said One In A Million Inc. CEO Octavius James”.

Last August, Michael Walker picked up one of the biggest wins of his career when he defeated Dante Craig on the undercard of the Diaz/Morales PPV card. The Chicago native thrilled the nearly 10,000 hometown fans at the Allstate Arena as he knocked out the former Olympian in round 2. He is no stranger to a fight of huge implications.

Walker vs. Echols 2Michael Walker having met Antwun Echols once before knows he must bring his best on October 3rd in their rematch. The Chicago native is preparing for more of the back and forth action he encountered in their first meeting.

Pictured left: Walker and Echols first high intensity bout ended in a draw.

Walker is working with an array of sparring partners that are pushing him to the limit, so he can be at his absolute best come October 3rd. The “Midnight Stalker” knows a win over Echols can propel him to mega fights with some of the top contenders in the middleweight division. Michael Walker senses the time is now for him to make a big splash in the middleweight division. One thing is for certain the fans in attendance are going to see one tremendous fight between two world-class middleweights.

March 28, 2008      Tavoris Cloud vs Mike Wood

Tavoris Cloud TKO1 1:23 Michael Wood  Tavoris Cloud vs Mike Wood 2This Tavoris Cloud is presently one of the best-kept secrets in the world of boxing. He’s probably the best fighter that no one is talking about. But that’s about to change, because knockouts like this don’t go unnoticed for long. This fight was for the vacant NABA/NABO/USBA Light-Heavyweight Championship, but it clearly belonged to Cloud before Wood even got gloved up. After a big Cloud left hook evokes a “didn’t hurt me” smile from Wood, a perfectly-timed right hook sends Wood down hard. He gets up slowly, in no hurry to get more punishment like that, but a quick barrage of punches from Cloud sends Wood down again, and the referee stopped the fight at 1:23 of round one. This kid is a STAR, and with three national titles around his waist, he will be ready to get in with the best in the division, including Tarver, Woods, Johnson, and Dawson. I just hope THEY are ready!Tavoris Cloud vs Mike Wood 3

 Louis Turner vs Dave Saunders

 Louis Turner TKO5 David Saunders

Chicagoland was treated to a Fight of the Year candidate in Angel “Toro” Hernandez vs. Louis Turner late last year. The action in that fight was referred to by ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael as “an old-school beating disguised as a legal boxing match”. It’s a fight that will be talked about for years to come all over the area. This fight offered some fireworks, too, but Turner didn’t have a Hernandez to rub up against this time. Saunders, owner of a 9-4 record, has an impressive chin, which he needed all night against Turner, whose left hooks and straight rights pounded on that chin again and again. In the third round, Turner lands a killer left hook on the chin of Suanders, Louis Turner vs Dave Saunders but goes down, himself, on a slip. He got up, resumed business, and had Saunders in immediate trouble again on the ropes. At least twice, Turner performed a move very reminiscent of the late, great Floyd Patterson with a leaping “gazelle” hook.In the fourth, just as Turner has Saunders staggered, the lights in the arena go out, all for the most basic inner lights. To the dismay of the ringside photographers, the action continued in near darkness, prompting the question, “Why is the fight continuing?” Turner didn’t need all the lights on to find his target, though, and midway through the fifth round he connects with a five-punch combination, sending Saunders to the mat extremely hard for the TKO at 2:40.

Carl Davis vs Jermell Barnes 2

Carl Davis UD Jermell BarnesDavis, at 232 lbs, looks like a man you wouldn’t want to tangle with. He’s rather tall, very muscular, and has a reach longer than most heavies, I’d imagine. Carl Davis vs Jermell Barnes His jab is probably his best weapon, too, which will serve him well as he moves up the heavyweight ranks. And the way the division looks at the top, I’m sure there’s room for another Chicago heavy to sit at the table with Oliver McCall, Andrew Golota, and Mike Mollo. The only real problem I see with Davis is the position of his right hand during his snappy left jab. He holds his right just a bit lower than he should, and opposition better than Barnes could possibly expose that as a weakness. On this night, however, Davis was the heavyweight boss in Chicago, and he essentially skated to an easy unanimous decision over a game, but overmatched, Barnes. 78-74 (twice) and 79-73, all for Davis.

Johnny Suarez vs Guy Packer

Johnathan Suarez UD Guy Packer Suarez, fighting in only his third professional fight, Johnny Suarez vs Guy Packer 2showed plenty of heart and determination in this win over Packer, who owns a record of 2-17-2. Suarez has to know that the opposition he’ll face early on in his career will be crude at best, and Packer is no exception. Packer never really seemed to bother Suarez, but the cautiousness of Suarez to engage had better leave him soon, or he may miss opportunities he’d otherwise receive. He did the job on this night, though, and good for him. Judges: 39-36, 40-35, and 38-37, all for Suarez.

Fredrick Fleming vs. Gadiel Andaluz

4 Rounds Super Featherweight

Fredrick Fleming vs. Gadiel Andaluz

Even though it was only Andaluz’s second professional fight he look like a seasoned pro against Fleming, dominating the fight right from the opening bell. Gadiel Andaluz He used some smooth combos to keep Fleming off-balance. At one point late in the first round, it looked like Andaluz would hit the showers early when a mean left hook to the face of Fleming seemed to knock him off balance. He somehow made it through round 1, but at 2:06 of the 2nd round Andaluz connected with a hard left hook to end Fleming’s night. Andaluz moved to 2-0 with the win. . . both wins coming by way of knockout. Fleming stays winless in his professional career moving to 0-5

Alvin D. Brown vs. Brandon Lee Rios

8 rounds Super Featherweight

Co-Main Event

Alvin brown vs Brandon Rios

The 21 year old Rios had no problems with Brown as he controlled the entire fight. RiosBrown, the veteran of 36 fights, couldn’t seem to get anything going. Rios showed great speed and power as he threw lightning fast combos that had Brown staggering throughout the fight’s duration. At 1:10 of the 2nd round Rios land a quick combo, punctuated by a right hook to knock out Brown. Rios, just 21, looks to be a future contender in the Super Featherweight division. With the win, Rios moves to 16-0 with 11 wins coming by way of knockout. With the loss Brown moves down to 26-11

Javier Jauregui vs. Miguel Angel Huerta

12 Rounds Lightweight

NABF Lightweight Championship Fight

Javier Jauregui vs. Miguel Angel Huerta

The Stadium was at full capacity as the NABF Lightweight Belt was up for grabs. Javier Jauregui vs. Miguel Angel Huerta 2This main event didn’t disappoint as both fighters came to fight with one thing on their minds: to walk out with the NABF belt. The action never stopped in this one as both Jauregui and Huerta brought action to every round. Jauregui with his aggressive style and Huerta with the crowd at his back traded powerful shots all through the fight. In the 10th Jauregui looked to be pushed to the canvas, but quickly got to his feet as referee Curtis Thrasher stepped in to make sure that Jauregui was alright. The action continued after that as both fighters pushed themselves to the bell as this fight would go the judges. The crowd knew who they wanted to win as chants of Huerta could be heard all the way to downtown Chicago. Javier Jauregui vs. Miguel Angel Huerta 3When the results came in Javier Jauregui, was the new NABF Lighweight Champion by Unanimous Decision. In a classy move the crowd favorite Huerta stayed around for pictures with his fans. What a great mainevent!

Miguel Angel Figueroa vs. Leo Bardo Martinez

6 Rounds Lightweight

Miguel Angel Figueroa vs. Leo Bardo Martinez

Talk about a dominating performance by Martinez! He did what ever he wanted in the ringagainst Figueroa. When ever Miguel Angel Figueroa vs. Leo Bardo Martinez 2Figueroa threws one of his very wide punches it opened him up to Martinez’s full-on power shots. Figueroa lasted all the way to 0:27 of the 4th round when referee Genaro Rodriguez called a stop to the action, as Figueroa could no longer protect himself. Martinez put on a good showing with the TKO, and he now moves to 13-9. Figueroa, with the loss, moves down to 4-6-1

Jose Guzman vs. Javier Garcia

4 rounds Lightweight

Jose Guzman vs Javier Garcia

The last fight of the night was also the quickest as both fighters showed Jose Guzman vs. Javier Garcia 2that they had power, however Guzman also showed that he doesn’t have much defense. Both fighters came out quickly, but at 2:44 of the 1st round Guzman was knocked out by a clean left hook by Garcia. Guzman was knocked out before he hit the canvas. With the win Garcia moves to 3-0-1. Guzman suffers his first loss of his professional career moving him down to 5-1.

8count Promotions, as usual, delivered a great night of competive fights, and an action-packed, albeit controversial, main event. Mark it down as another great night of fights at Cicero Stadium.

This Thur., Miller & Miller Lite Present One In A Million’s Official Weigh-In at Langel’s Pizza

January 29 (Merrillville, IN) - Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana fight fans are invited to Langel’s Pizza, 2833 Highway Avenue in Highland, Indiana, this Thursday at 6 p.m. for the official boxer weigh ins for One In A Million’s six-bout card the following night. Sponsored by Miller and Miller Lite, the Miller Girls will be at Langel’s taking photos and awarding prizes including tickets to Friday night’s six-bout boxing card at the Radisson at Star Plaza in Merrillville. “We’re looking forward to another great year with Octavius James’ One In A Million and Miller,” said Rodney Langel, owner of Langel’s Pizza. “Boxing and Miller is the perfect one-two combination.” In Friday night’s main event, One In A Million’s franchise player, Michael “The Midnight Stalker Walker” (17-0-1, 11 KOs) looks to keep his unbeaten streak alive by making quick work of Jerome Elder of Indy. Highly touted by boxing insiders, Walker is a top middleweight prospect in a division deep in talent. When asked who he wants next, Walker responded, “Ronald Hearns. He says he’s the ‘Chosen One.’ Let’s see him choose to step in the ring with me. We’ll see if he’s made of the same stuff that his daddy (Thomas Hearns) was. I doubt it.”At 5′1″, featherweight Evette Colazzo may be the smallest fighter on the card, but she may be the biggest in action. A two-time Chicago Golden Gloves Champ, “KO Queen” Colazzo (2-0, 2 KOs) faces a very brave Kim Colbert on Friday.

“Evette might steal the show,” said Octavius James, CEO of One In A Million. “Her size is deceiving. When this little Latina enters the ring and starts throwing great, big bombs, the crowd goes wild.”

Fight fans love the hard punching heavyweights and on Friday night, the big boys return to action at the Radisson when One In A Million’s undefeated heavyweight Michael Parker (5-0, 4 KOs) steps into the ring with Leo Sylvest (5-3, 3 KOs) of Indy. With Parker winning 4 of his 5 bouts by KO and Sylvest winning 3 of his 5 bouts by KO, this one should be exciting… while it lasts.

One In A Million stablemates, featured in separate bouts, include super middleweight Jimmy “The Fighting School Teacher” Holmes (16-1-2, 9) of DeMotte, super middleweight Derrick “Superman” Findley (9-2, 5) of Gary and welterweight Ed Ochoa (2-0, 2) of Hobart.
